xPV is the productivity side: the pitch is split into zones and each origin→destination pair gets a value — how much the ball advances, how rare that route is, and how far it travels. Only completed passes count. A pass from deep to the final third scores more than a safe lateral in the same zone.
xP is the precision side: for each pass, the model estimates how likely it is to be completed from origin to destination — like a simplified xG, but for passes. It uses distance and angle on a zoned pitch; both completed and missed passes count. You beat xP when you complete harder passes than expected.
Pass grades boil xP and xPV down to letters and a 1–10 score, ranked against midfield peers across Europe — not just within one league. You see quickly who distributes at an elite level.
Pass maps, volume, match-to-match consistency, progression into the final third and chance creation — plus composite pass profiles. Together they show how a player builds play, when they take risks and where their distribution hurts opponents.
